Norethisterone (or norethindrone) (or 19-nor-17α-ethynyltestosterone) is a molecule used in some combined oral contraceptive pills and in some progestogen only pills. It is a progestogen and can be used to treat premenstrual syndrome, painful periods, abnormal heavy bleeding, irregular periods, menopausal syndrome (in combination with oestrogen), or to postpone a period. Norethindrone was the first orally highly active progestin to be synthesized. It was synthesized for the first time by chemists Luis Miramontes, Carl Djerassi, and George Rosenkranz at Syntex in Mexico City in 1951. It was the progestin used in one of the first two oral contraceptives. It is often used as the related ester, norethisterone acetate.

Women who have taken Aygestin/Norethindrone Please Help!?
Q. I was recently put on Aygestin (Norethindrone). I was prescribed five 5mg tablets (once a day for five days). I stoped taking it yesterday. While taking it I noticed I was much more emotional and since I have stopped taking it I feel I am having emotional outbursts (crying, anxiety etc.). Is this normal? When can I expect these unpleasant feelings to stop? They are horrible! Please Help!

A. Yeah, that's typical. This is an artificial progesterone, and they all have the possible side-effect of making you depressed. It will take a few days to get it out of your system, so the emotional lows will last for a few days following you stopping the drug. But it should go away shortly. I just answered a similar question here, about a different artificial progesterone:

is .35 mg of norethindrone per pill a high or low dose of birthcontrol pill?
Q. if its low, whats concidered high and vice versa...

A. Any pill with 0.35mcg or less of estrogen is considered a low dose pill. Under 0.20mcg is considered ultra low dose. Ultra lose dose pills like Yaz and Loestrin 24 FE are relatively newer.

Long-term effects of taking progesterone (women)?
Q. My gynocologist did a D & C but i'm still bleeding all the time again. I don't have endometriosis but I do have polycycstic ovarian disease. The doc perscribed norethindrone (progesterone) twice a day and it has stopped the bleeding but I'm concerned about long term effects of taking a hormone everyday! I'm over 35 and I do smoke. Anyone have any experience with this kind of problem or taking progesterone would be very helpful in my decision to push for a hysterectomy to be done with all this madness.

A. I was on it for endometriosis and it was horrible. I had severe migraines and fatigue, and my hair fell out to the point where i was almost bald. Oh yeah , then there was the horrible depression. I would never do it again, and would not recommend it to anybody. I ended up getting a hysterectomy, which i should have just done in the first place. Everyone is different, so maybe it would be ok for you, but hormones are nothing to mess around with. If you smoke, your doctor should not be advising you to take hormones anyways. I know it's a tuff decision to make, but i was much happier after my operation. Good luck to you, sorry if i scared you with my horror story, but i wish i would have known those things ahead of time :-)
