This is the overview for the medical abbreviations series. This list is far from complete; you can help by expanding it. Comprehensive reference books of medical abbreviations are available in bookstores and libraries. (See the bibliography for some suggested titles.) Abbreviations are used very frequently in medicine. They boost efficiency as long as they are used intelligently. The advantages of brevity should be weighed against the possibilities of crypticness (making the communication harder for others to understand) and ambiguity (having more than one possible interpretation). In other words, a smart communicator uses good shortcuts, but makes sure that other people will understand what he means. Certain medical abbreviations should be avoided to prevent mistakes. Orthographic stylingPeriods (stops)Periods (stops) are often used in styling abbreviations. Prevalent practice in medicine today is often to forgo them as unnecessary.
PluralsThe prevalent way to represent plurals for medical acronyms is simply to affix a lowercase s (no apostrophe).
PossessivesPossessive forms are not often needed, but can be formed using apostrophe + s. Often the writer can also recast the sentence to avoid it.

Asked by Nikki - Mon Jan 8 21:39:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. this is a great site hope it helps =) Answered by SweetnSassy - Mon Jan 8 21:47:35 2007 Do you think enough steps have been taken to reduce Medical errors? Explain why you agree or disagree.? Q. Documentation errors have always been part of the health care profession. Some people in the medical field believe that many of these errors are the result of using abbreviations in handwritten documentation related to patients. Therefore, accreditation agencies are now composing lists of terms that should not be abbreviated. Do you think enough has been done to reduce medical errors now that they have a "Do not use" list for abbreviations? Why or why not? Thank you for your opinion's Asked by Mom of 2 baby bois - Fri Feb 6 20:54:44 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I do not think there will ever be enough steps taken to eradicate errors within the medical profession; but, I do think these professionals are doing their best to get them as low as possible. The largest number of errors made within the medical profession is due to human error. Humans are not, and never will be perfect. Therefore, errors will always exist within the medical profession. Answered by iluvbirds25 - Fri Feb 6 21:09:28 2009 What is the difference between a DO and an MD?
Q. I scheduled an appointment with an obgyn and one of the doctors in the group practice is listed as a DO (doctor of obstetrics) and the three others are listed as MD/FACOG. I know what all of these abbreviations stand for but I don't know which is better as far as medical care for someone trying to conceive. Is a DO also an MD and maybe they just forgot to list the MD after her name? Thanks for your help. Asked by Heidi - Sat Nov 4 02:41:04 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. A "DO" is not a "doctor of obstetrics" but a "doctor of osteopathy." They attend osteopathic medical schools that add physical and alternative treatments similar to chiropractic to the standard curriculum and must pass the same board exams as for a doctor of medicine. "FACOG" means "Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists." This is board certification in women's medicine and a great credential. It means they have had a residency in OB./GYN, a mimimum number of years in practice and have passed a specific exam for their specialty. (Someone "board eligible" is in this process and also highly qualified.) There are subspecialties in fertility, oncology and other types of OB/GYN, so you may want to ask about this… [cont.] Answered by PATRICIA G F - Sat Nov 4 03:27:43 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "list of medical abbreviations" Body parts trade based in Ukraine
