A drug, broadly speaking, is any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. There is no single, precise definition, as there are different meanings in drug control law, government regulations, medicine, and colloquial usage.

In pharmacology, a drug is "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being." Drugs may be prescribed for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.

Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior. Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation.

Drugs are usually distinguished from endogenous biochemicals by being introduced from outside the organism. For example, insulin is a hormone that is synthesized in the body; it is called a hormone when it is synthesized by the pancreas inside the body, but if it is introduced into the body from outside, it is called a drug.

Many natural substances such as beers, wines, and some mushrooms, blur the line between food and drugs, as when ingested they affect the functioning of both mind and body.

How long does it take for a drug to leave the body?
Q. I have been taking a drug called kava kava which is an herbal drug I don't know if anyone is familiar with it or not but a couple days after taking this drug I started having serious heart palpitations. I researched online and I see that this drug is known to cause heart palpitations. Do you think this drug is actually causing the palpitations that I am having and also how long does it take for this drug to leave the system so that I can stop having these side effects? I have been drinking lots of water to see if that helps.

A. The time that a drug takes to leave your system is usually measured by its "half life", meaning the time it takes for half of the drug's metabolic by-products to leave your system. I just looked up kava kava, and read that it has a half life of 9 hours. This means though that what remains in your system can hang around for much longer than this - up to a couple of days. Drinking water is about the best thing you can do.

What kind of drug is a white pill with a triangle on it?
Q. I found a couple of white pills, rather thin, they are round and have a white triangle on it and that's all. I found them with several valiums so I think they may be some kind of muscle relaxer or anxiety drug (found in my husband's bag - we're going through a divorce). Does anyone know what kind of drug this might be?

A. See if the PDR is located online. It is the book that describes all medication. Perhaps the library may have one, certainly a doctor's office will. You may even try asking a pharamist.

Do I have to take a drug test to get my private pilots license?
Q. I have been taking flying lessons for the past couple of weeks and am about to get my physical. This is required to fly solo, and I was wondering if I have to pass a drug test at my physical. I don't really do drugs, but I smoke a little doober about once every two weeks or so. Will I pass this drug test and should I be worried?

A. During your physical exam you will need to give a urine sample which the doctor will test for diabetes. That's about it. There's no drug test per se that happens. That said, I'd suggest VERY strongly that you do NOT smoke "a little doober" because if you are less than 100% able to fly and the FAA finds out, you will lose your license. Remember the IM SAFE rule for flying? Follow it... it's good!
