It is the first step of digestion and it increases the surface area of foods to allow more efficient break down by enzymes. During the mastication process, the food is positioned between the teeth for grinding by the cheek and tongue. As chewing continues, the food is made softer and warmer, and the enzymes in saliva begin to break down carbohydrates in the food. After chewing, the food (now called a bolus) is swallowed. It enters the esophagus and continues on to the stomach, where the next step of digestion occurs. Cattle and some other animals, called ruminants, chew food more than once to extract more nutrients. After the first round of chewing, this food is called cud. The chewing cycleMastication is a repetitive sequence of jaw opening and closing with a profile in the vertical plane called the chewing cycle. Mastication consists of a number of chewing cycles. The human chewing cycle consists of three phases:

He keeps chewing on the bars of his cage and I'm trying to get him to stop. I keep buying them wood blocks and other things to chew on, but he won't pay any attention to them. I don't know if he's chewing because he's restless, or because he's trying to gnaw down his teeth, but they both get about an hour out of their cage every day so they shouldn't be too restless. Any advice? Asked by charlie charlie - Thu Apr 10 19:28:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Rats don't actually need items to wear their teeth down, they can do so themselves in a process called bruxing where they grind their teeth together. They do enjoy chewing on other things, however, and often the bars of their cage is one of them. It doesn't necessarily mean he is restless, though if you can give him anything else in his cage like a tunnel, hammock, or wheel it may help. If he chooses to still chew on the bars, it seems that is his choice and there isn't much you can do about it. I've heard people say putting bitter apple or vaseline on the bars can make them stop, but there really is no harm in it unless they are eating paint that comes off it or something, or it is keeping you up at night. My kitten is teething which is pretty much okay if only she would chew on anything else except my feet. She can't get enough of the chewy goodness of my feet and toes and it sure hurts. She can get incredibly cranky if she doesn't get her daily dose of toe chewing. Chunks of my feet are fast disappearing, help? Asked by Plastic Cup - Sun Oct 11 03:39:46 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I used bitter apple spray to keep my three from chewing wires, and it works wonders!! I recommend it to anyone that has a kitten that has to chew on everything while they are teething. As far as your feet, well I don't recommend using the spray on them. While it may work, it's giving them a bad vibe about you, and I am sure you don't want your cat to see you as a negative part of her life. My three kittens used to love to chew on my toes, but they soon grew out of it, and it was pretty fast.. Just be patient and let life go on as it will be best for you and the kitten. ;) I hope this helps, Answered by Tim Isenhour - Sun Oct 11 04:07:08 2009 How does metal make humans angry but makes termites chew faster?
Q. Every one says metal makes people angry and makes termites chew faster, but out of curiosity, WHY?? Is it the tempo, volume or something else? Does it stimulate hunger in termites? Asked by pink citrus lemonade - Sat Feb 23 19:54:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Music is a form of energy, and energy motivates the behaviors of lifeforms. You could even call it sorcery or magick if you'd like, but most of the public has been convinced that such things couldn't possibly exist. They'd rather turn on their TVs and believe everything that these so-called "reputable" scientists and religious figures would tell them, without truly assessing the situation with their own hearts.
