From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Budesonide is a glucocorticoid steroid for the treatment of asthma, non-infectious rhinitis (including hay fever and other allergies), and for treatment and prevention of nasal polyposis. Additionally, it is used for Crohn's disease (inflammatory bowel disease). It is marketed by AstraZeneca as a nasal inhalant under the brand name Rhinocort (in Denmark, as Rhinosol), as an oral inhalant under the brand name Pulmicort, and as either an enema or a modified release oral capsule under the brand name Entocort. It is also sold in combination with formoterol (Oxis) in a single inhaler, under the brand name Symbicort. In Brazil it's marketed by Eurofarma under the brand name Noex. PharmacologyBudesonide has a high first pass metabolism. It has efficacy in the terminal ileum and the right colon. Budesonide in comparison with prednisolone has been associated with fewer bone density losses and unlike other corticosteroids has little influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which also limit the need of tapering before discontinuation. Overall, it has a lower incidence of systemic manifestations than similar medications. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is considered a high dose of steroid? Q. i have been prescribed Budesonide 200 micrograms, one inhalation twice a day, for 7 days What sort of dose is this considered? Am i likey to encounter any problems or ill effects? Thanks for any info. Asked by M M - Sat Sep 20 08:52:02 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There is no strict definition of what a 'high dose' is for steroid medications, but I can assure you that Budesonide 200mcg 2x/day is actually quite a conservative dose, on the low end. Medical professionals and patients generally worry about steroid side effects when using oral ingested medication. Inhaled steroids (eg. for asthma) have a long track record of being safe, particular at initial or low doses. The most common significant side effect from Budesonide inhaled would be throat irritation & oral thrush, but this occurs only with prolonged use, and I would not expect any problems with 1 week. Answered by Ivan L - Sat Sep 20 11:01:05 2008 Help with Crohn's Disease tummy pain? Q. I am 26 and have had Crohn's for 11 years. I have had two operations and tried all sorts of medication - prednisolone, immuran, mesasal, entocort. I am suffering yet another flare-up and my stomach pain has been the most severe yet. I'm used to discomfort but this is the worst I've experienced - not even my hot water bottle is helping! My tests show chronic inflammation and my tummy has swollen so much I actually look pregnant (which I'm not). I am currently taking entocort (budesonide) but I am desperate to combat this pain somehow. I am usually a pro at dealing with my tummy pain but this time around it is constant and I can't seem to get rid of it. Any suggestions? I don't want to have a third operation. Our professor said Remicade and Thalidomide are some current medications that are used. Have you tried these? Apparently Thalidomide has a great anti-inflammatory result, but is also associated with severe birth defects (read about "thalidomide babies" on google). Depending on your future child plans, etc. this could be an option for you. Maybe ask your doctor about these as options.
