A drug, broadly speaking, is any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. There is no single, precise definition, as there are different meanings in drug control law, government regulations, medicine, and colloquial usage.

In pharmacology, a drug is "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being." Drugs may be prescribed for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.

Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior. Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation.

Drugs are usually distinguished from endogenous biochemicals by being introduced from outside the organism. For example, insulin is a hormone that is synthesized in the body; it is called a hormone when it is synthesized by the pancreas inside the body, but if it is introduced into the body from outside, it is called a drug.

Many natural substances such as beers, wines, and some mushrooms, blur the line between food and drugs, as when ingested they affect the functioning of both mind and body.

What should be done to keep hard drugs out of prisons?
Q. Having been there, there are alot of drugs in prisons and it doesn't help anybody. People who are addicted can get worse and some people get into hard drugs in there. As far as I saw drugs came in in all sort of ways but I stayed pretty much clear of anything hard. Without stopping visits or stuff like that what do you think could be done to keep drugs out?

What organ or system in your body processes drugs? My friend seems to process his drugs much quicker?
Q. Whenever my friend does drugs his body seems to process them very quickly. Granted he has only done marijuana, ecstasy, and adderall, he seem to get over the "high" very quickly. Why does it last for only a short while, and what part of his body is doing this? Please don't answer with comments such as don't take drugs and that it is bad. He is only an occasional user.

A. most drugs are metabolized by the liver but some are excreted by the kidneys. the THC in marijuana is stored in fat cells. perhaps, your friend doesn't have much fat. ecstasy and adderall are stimulants. up to 30% of amphetamine is excreted unchanged in the urine. your friend may have a higher tolerance for the drugs. has he been using them longer than you? he may be on drugs that are considered enzyme inducers which would speed up metabolism in the liver. perhaps, he was just born with a faster metabolism than you.
