Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." (1920, C.E.A. Winslow) It is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). Public health is typically divided into epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, social, behavioral, and occupational health are also important subfields. There are 2 distinct characteristics of public health: 1. It deals with preventive rather than curative aspects of health 2. It deals with population-level, rather than individual-level health issues The focus of public health intervention is to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. In addition to these activities, in many cases treating a disease may be vital to preventing it in others, such as during an outbreak of an infectious disease. Hand washing, vaccination programs and distribution of condoms are examples of public health measures. The goal of public health is to improve lives through the prevention and treatment of disease. The United Nations' World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Answered by Ontheotherhand - Wed Jan 9 16:26:33 2008 What's a really good way to gain experience in the field of public health during the summer? Q. I would like to pursue my education in public health. I'm from a social science/international development background. I am mostly interested in injuries, violence, mental health and women's health. I'm volunteering at the Sexual Assault Center but I'm sure there's something else I could do during the summer. Asked by Josephine - Wed Apr 15 16:28:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can also try volunteering at any state run facility for the mentally handicapped. There you will find mental, physical, and aggressive behavior patients all at one facility. You will probably have to go through a 2 week safety training session for both the safety of yourself and the people there. You might also try to volunteer at a place for women that have been in a physically abusive relationship. I would imagine you might have to go though the state or county for that because of the safety issues. Good luck and God Bless. This is a very hard career to work in. I actually did most of my nursing in a state facility. Q. I'm a dental hygienist and I since I was in school I had a strong interest in public health. I've been looking into schools so that I can obtain a master's degree in public health, but I want to know what all I can do with it because I don't want to work in private practice for my whole career. Asked by southern_allure - Tue Mar 18 00:22:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Check with your local and state health offices. My aunt worked with a dentist in New York for 10 years providing service to inmates at a local prison. When he left for private practice- he took her with him at a much higher salary and shorter hours. She still volunteers at the school to offer proper dental care instructions for the students. Understandably, you might not be looking on the same level, but if there is a need for public health professionals that are experienced in the dental area, they should be able to help you identify and find those positions.
