Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." (1920, C.E.A. Winslow) It is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). Public health is typically divided into epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, social, behavioral, and occupational health are also important subfields.

There are 2 distinct characteristics of public health:

1. It deals with preventive rather than curative aspects of health 2. It deals with population-level, rather than individual-level health issues

The focus of public health intervention is to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. In addition to these activities, in many cases treating a disease may be vital to preventing it in others, such as during an outbreak of an infectious disease. Hand washing, vaccination programs and distribution of condoms are examples of public health measures.

The goal of public health is to improve lives through the prevention and treatment of disease. The United Nations' World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

A. The degree you have really doesn't matter too much. whats important is finishing the prereqs which are gen chem1 and 2, organic chem 1 and 2, anatomy and phys. microbiology, calculus, physics 1 and 2 and a few others. It also help to take some upper level chem and bio classes like biochem and histology. You need good grades and also need to score well on the MCAT.

Where do we draw the line between Public Health and Eugenics?
Q. Also, if you know any sources in terms of Public Health Theory or philosophy of Public Health, I'd really appreciate a recommendation. Did Foucault write about public health?

A. How do you mean? If we provide immunizations for all, everyone benefits. Same thing with public sanitation & sewage. I think we have a pretty clean line between public health and eugenics today. I realize that eugenics were used in the past to condone the sterilization of the mentally retarded, african americans, etc. in the name of public health. We could still face similar problems in the future. Ex. the mandatory sterilization of crack-whore mothers; socialized medicine; etc.

Could I major in Public Health to become an optometrist?
Q. I am going to college next year, and I would like to be an optometrist. Most pre-optometry students major in biology, but I think that I could meet optometry school requirements by majoring in public health. I think I would enjoy studying public health more than biology, it would be more helpful careerwise, and if i decide not to go to optometry school, I could still get a job (what do you do with a biology degree?). Is this a good idea?
Asked by celiarenee91 - Thu May 7 14:05:40 2009 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could do it, but it might put you at a disadvantage compared to other optometry students. We have a couple of people in our class who did not major in biology, so they are struggling a lot in some of our courses. The point of a degree in biology is to prepare you for optometry school.
