What is a double-placebo group good for in an experiment?
Q. For example, let's say i'm comparing the effects of two drugs. One group contains one drug plus placebo, another group contains the secong drug plus placebo. Why would it be recommended to have a third group be a double-placebo group?
Asked by AKJ - Sun Mar 9 21:02:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The third group with the double placebo gives you the control group. Since both of the first two groups are using an active drug, you need a third group who is getting placebos only to determine the true effects of both drugs... Although, since both drugs are being tested seperatly rather than together, I am really not sure why these drugs arent being tested seperatly. For this scenario you really need 4 groups, one for both meds, one for the first med and placebo, one for second med and placebo, and then the control group only receiving placebo

How soon after starting the placebo pills should my period start?
Q. This is my second month on birth control. I'm sexually active so I'm really careful about taking the pulls at the same time of everyday. I took the first placebo pill of the month last night, and I still haven't started my period. So my question is, how soon after starting the placebo pills should my period start? --Last month was abnormal, I was on a 3 week period. Also: I've been feeling like I'm going to start soon, and my face is breaking out. All common factors for me when my period is about to start.
Asked by Jonas - Sun Dec 6 15:24:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its always been within 24 hours of taking the first reminder pill for me. It could take up to three packs of pills for it to become regular first day of the sugar pill though. I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about as long as you really have been taking the pills at the same time every day.

When during the placebo week of birth control is your period supposed to come?
Q. Can it come any day during the last week or is it supposed to be the first day. I took my first placebo pill yesterday, and today, nothing.
Asked by Kat. - Wed Sep 9 07:32:15 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you're taking the 28 day pack where the last row is the placebos, your period should come on the third placebo pill. It can come anytime during that row though. My periods always came on the third placebo pill when I was taking the pill.

How soon into your placebo pills should you start your period?
Q. I am on the Seasonique birth control pill and this will be my first 'bleeding time' after starting it. I am on my second day of taking the placebo pills, and although this morning I felt some mild cramping I have not yet gotten my period and the cramps have subsided. How soon will I get my period?

A. mine usually doesn't start until day 4 or 5 in the placebo pills. Since you just started, it could take a couple of months for it become regulated. But eventually if you take the pill the same time every day, you will know exactly when you will start.

Can the placebo effect work for relieving insomnia?
Q. I realize that placebos can help people with colds, allergies and even pain, but can placebos also help induce sleep? The doctor said it is ok if I want to give a chronic insomniac, elderly, bed-ridden relative of mine some placebo pills since she can't take any real sleeping pills. But do placebos really work for sleep?
Asked by Jim G - Thu Aug 6 15:11:09 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. placebos are nothing but sugar pills they have no medication in them whatsoever. the effects of placebos are strictly psychological. you can give them to her and see if they work they obviously wont do any harm. i imagine that placebos can work for anything though. as long as the person thinks shes getting real medicine it might work. good luck

What happens when you skip the placebo pills when on birth control?
Q. I'm on birth control (pills) and I have skipped the placebo pills for about five months. I know that you should have a period every month but every time it comes around it just seems inconvinient and i just skip them. I'm starting to get brownish discharge now. Is that from skipping them for so long? Like does not having a period for so long effect the body? I know that not physically taking the pills wont do anything but what are the effects of not having a period for 5 months?

Q. My question is after taking the first placebo pills how long until my period comes?

A. When I took ortho I would start the pack on a Sunday and then finish on a Sat-when I got to placebo pills I wouldn't start until Thursday-so it took me about five days to start. It depends on the hormone level in the pill and how your body reacts to it.

Can I get pregnant while on birth control during the week I take the placebo pills?
Q. I've been on birth control for 6 months now and I was wondering if the chance of getting pregnant increases during the week I take the sugar/placebo pills. I usually don't start my period until 3 or 4 days into the week. Is it still safe to have sex BEFORE i start my period but WHILE i'm on the week of placebo pills?
Asked by Felonious - Wed May 13 18:57:10 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are unlikely to get pregnant at any time while on the pill - its not impossible just unlikely. The pill doesn't work on a daily basis, there is a build up of hormones that prevent ovulation. You are no more likely to get pregnant when taking the placebo pills (or no pills), than when taking the hormones.

A. Yes this is normal, do not change the schedule of your pills just because you are just now getting a period. Stick to the same schedule and you will see things even out over time.

What is the difference in the number of positive responders to SSRI's and placebo?
Q. In clinical trials what is on average the difference in the number of positive responders between SSRIs and placebo for the treatment of depression? Please can you also refer to medical articles or websites if possible. Thankyou thefreevariable it's a very interesting link. Hi David D. thankyou for your interesting answer. Because of these differences in results, from none to large differences compared to placebo I do agree that doctors should discuss this with patients. The difference (whether subjective or measurable) between mild and severe depression should partly determine treatment measures.
Asked by unknown - Fri Jul 6 15:42:22 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The answer to your question depends on what you mean by a couple of the words in it. What do you mean by "responder"? What do you mean by "depression"? Clinical trials vary in how they define those words. Here is a good discussion of treatments from a website that's almost 10 years old: That NIMH study from 1989 and 1992 he refers to was an eye-opener for a lot of professionals. It showed lots of people doing well with mild depression, no matter how treated, including placebo. In severe depression, though, the placebo response wasn't the 30 - 50% that is often found. It was just 18%, while the response to the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine was 76%. It's not that antidepressants work better in sicker patients. It's that… [cont.]

Can taking antibiotics during the placebo week decrease the birth control effectiveness?
Q. I'm currently taking amoxicillin for strep. I started taking it after I got my period on Wednesday. Now, I'm wondering if since I took it during the placebo week, will it lessen the effects of my new birth control pack that I start tomorrow? Thanks :)
Asked by Fish are friends, not food (: - Sun Mar 28 01:35:04 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will have to finish your complete round of antibiotic before getting back on birth control otherwise you will be wasting pills because the antibiotics need to clear your system and preferably along with the strep give yourself at least 48 hours if not more. And of course be sure that after all of this your birth control has had time to work before engaging in sexual activity

Can I take my birth control placebo pills earlier for an earlier period?
Q. Can I take my placebo pills a week earlier than I would be taking them, and then taking the hormone pills the week I would supposed to be taking my placebo pills? I have plans the week of placebo pills, and I don't want to be on my period that week, so can I manipulate my period like this? I actually don't use them for contraceptives. I'm not sexually active. I've been prescribed BC for acne and regulation.
Asked by Tina T - Fri Oct 16 15:40:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just carry on taking your pill as normal and when your due to go on the sugar pills (placebo pills) skip them, go strait back to the beginning of the hormonal pills, that way you get no period at all. It's safe to that occasionally. I wouldn't do what you've suggested cos you might stuff up the way the pill is working in regards to keeping you protected.

Does the Placebo Effect work, in regards to passive actions?
Q. Does the Placebo Effect work, in regards to passive actions? Such as the healing of the body. If you take a pill that they say will make your wound heal faster even though it does not, will your body heal faster because you believe it will?
Asked by afflictionitive_serenity - Mon Aug 3 00:47:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Studies have proven that yes, the placebo effect will heal wounds and other such things. This relates to the law of attraction which shows that the more you believe in something, the faster it will become a reality, because your brain cannot differentiate between reality and imagination. This goes into the technique of visualization, which shows that the more you imagine something for a certain time each day, the faster it becomes a reality. The placebo effect is very similar, and shows that your brain is quite powerful.
