An effective dose in pharmacology is the amount of drug that produces a therapeutic response in 50% of the people taking it, sometimes also called ED-50. In radiation protection it is an estimate of the stochastic effect that a non-uniform radiation dose has on a human.

Pharmacology

In pharmacology, effective dose is the median dose that produces the desired effect of a drug. The effective dose is often determined based on analysing the dose-response relationship specific to the drug. The dosage that produces a desired effect in half the test population is referred to as the ED-50, for "Effective dose, 50%".

I want to take coenzyme Q10 but it is really expensive. Is 30 mg. large enough a dose to be effective?
Q. I would take more, but economic constraints prevent me from doing that. I have heard about the numerous benefits of this antioxidant.

A. It's hard to answer a question about effective doses when the stuff has no proven effect at all, at any dose. This is a "dietary supplement," so it doesn't have to show effectiveness to be marketed. That's why you're seeing testimonials instead of monographs from the medical literature. Maybe it does some good, maybe it doesn't, and maybe some dose matters, but it all falls for now into the category of quackery, so do what you want, but caveat emptor.

X-ray- Effective dose?
Q. Could anyone tell me the effective does of radiation you'd get from a head X-ray, a spine X-ray or a neck X-ray? As I had to have my spine and neck done but they're sending me for a CT scan for my head as the radiation dose would be too much apparently. Thanks in advance, I know that's a mammoth task! Any spammers will be reported.

Higher dose, less effective?
Q. I am prescribed 30mg of Adderall, two times a day. I would think that if I took 3 doses, the effects would be amplified, but usually it makes me more tired and lethargic. Is it possible that more of some drugs (like Adderall) aren't more effective in higher amounts?

A. As a physican, I recommend you take the prescibed amount and not alter the amount intake unless authorized by your physican. Overdosing on medication does not give a better effect. The overdose does kill brain cells and may cause liver and renal failure.
